MISSION STATEMENTCME PurposeThe primary mission of the Office of Continuing Medical Education (OCME) is to disseminate the latest clinical findings and basic research results by educating physicians and other healthcare professionals, as well as medical students and graduate students in accordance with the mission of the College of Medicine and the Arizona Health Sciences Center (AHSC). As the CME office of the only allopathic medical school in Arizona, the OCME strives to provide healthcare education by providing service for physicians of Arizona and extends its service to include state, national and international healthcare professionals. The OCME provides this education through activities that lead to improved patient care outcomes. ContentThe OCME collaborates with the AHSC faculty and renowned community, state, national and international educators, to develop, implement, and evaluate educational activities to enhance competencies related to patient care, professionalism, interpersonal and communication skills, medical knowledge, practice-based learning and improvement, and systems-based practice in primary and specialty patient care. The content is based on evidence that is accepted within the profession of medicine and that conform to the generally accepted standards of experimental design, data collection and analyses. Target AudienceThis education is delivered primarily to a target audience of physicians, but the needs of other healthcare professionals and students are considered. The specific characteristics of participants are identified through the needs assessment: Previous educational activity evaluation data, current research articles, literature review, expert opinion or faculty perceptions, survey or focus group notes, new techniques/protocols, audit and review, consensus report recommendations, self-assessment results, or other processes. These are addressed in the educational design of each activity, which include traditional and innovative educational methods. Types of ActivitiesLive conferences, regularly scheduled conferences (grand rounds), teleconferences, audio-conferences, mini-residency programs, enduring materials and internet education. ScopeThe scope of activities involves the body of knowledge and skills generally recognized and accepted by the profession within the basic medical sciences, the discipline of clinical medicine, and the provision of healthcare to the public. ResultPhysicians and other healthcare professionals and medical students will, as a result of the (CME) program, evidence a desire for lifelong independent learning and scholarship and demonstrate improved professional knowledge, skills and attitudes. Continuous assessment of results is achieved by evaluation of individual speakers and the overall activity that measure the degree to which learners’ needs were met and desired results were achieved. These data are used to continuously improve future activities and the overall CME program. The mission statement will be reviewed annually and approved by the Administrator, Continuing Medical Education, AHSC, the Chair, CME Committee, the Vice Dean, Academic Affairs and the Dean, College of Medicine.
